A DVD in 5.0 sound with good staging, great music
Spectacular recording from the Paris Opera on TDK. A two disc set for the price of one, with the opening chorus placed at the end rather than the beginning of the first act (Stalin would have been grouchy but we can be grateful.)

The staging has enough Stalinist propaganda to have an authentic feel (it's only half tongue in cheek - remember the Parisians still have stuff named after Uncle Joe over there). Maybe a little sparse and "tasteful" otherwise on sets and no Soviet cast of thousands but the war half is imaginative, the cast quite good, and most important, the music is clear and concise and quite spectacular. A bargain. - steve , posted 09/09/04
