there is no substitute
admittedly hard to decipher, this book has extreme detail. it is possible to find information on recently popular herbs if you can match the antiquated name with its modern counterpart. not a beginner's book, but having begun with this one, i find all others unsatisfying. - mo , posted 06/27/11

Old Maudie
I'm a third generation herbalist and have over 200 herbals at my disposal. Maudie Grieve's A Modern Herbal while out of date in some minor aspects, and definitely pro-British in attitude, is still the bench mark of herbal books. Without a doubt her's is the most extensive and practical still being published. For beginners, it might be a bit wordy...but stick with it...use other herbals also, but always go back to Old Maudie. She won't steer you wrong. - Unsubscribed , posted 08/10/06
