Bonobo - Days to Come
(released in October) Bonobo's fourth album is a departure from his definitive trip-hop stylings. A man who has set the standard for the genre, Simon Green has furthered the musicality of his music, as all great innovators do. At first I wasn't crazy about this album. I read a review stating that half the tracks had vocals and allowed this to bias me against them. The first few times I only listened to the instrumentals, and thus only took partial enjoyment. It was when I finally listened to the album from beginning to end that I got it. Vocalist Bajka is a perfect fit to the new jam band meets trip hop feel that Green and collaborators have created. When I saw the band at the jazz festival a couple years ago they were beginning to head in this direction, though vocals were still absent. But this is anything but another Portishead rip, Bajka's voice soulful and intriguing atop funky beats. The only disappointment comes late in the album with a song sung by fellow ninja Fink which is just a little too indy rockish for me. Still, a fantastic album and a good progressive omen for the survival of a genre which died off somewhat at the beginngng of the century but is lately making a resurgence.
