Juno Award-nominee
Alex Cuba Band “Humo de Tabaco” receives a 2006 Juno Award nomination.
(Canada’s version of the US Grammy award)
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announces their 2006 Juno awards nominees, with World Music Album of the year nomination for Globe Star Recordings Artist Alex Cuba Band.
Receiving his first nomination as a solo artist, front man Alexis Puentes founder and leader of the Alex Cuba Band receives a “World Music Album of the Year” nod for his Humo de Tabaco CD. This is the second nomination for Alexis; his first was for the 2003 album Morumba Cubana recorded with his brother Adonis Puentes as The Puentes Brothers.
Humo de Tabaco has had wide acceptance not only on Canadian radio but with music television as well. The Alex Cuba Band video Lo Mismo Que Yo, a duet with Canadian singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith, maintained among the Top 10 videos on the Bravo music video charts for eight straight weeks. The video peaked at # 3 ahead of popular artists like Diana Krall, Stevie Wonder, Michael Buble and Paul McCartney. Lo Mismo Que Yo continues to be one of the most requested videos, remaining on the Bravo charts for more than twelve consecutive weeks. Equally prominent has been the success of Humo de Tabaco on Apple’s digital music site iTunes, where the album has remained among the top 10 most downloaded albums for more than seven consecutive weeks.
Humo de Tabaco, just as if it were a calling card to the world music audience, eloquently introduces Alex Cuba Band with a distinct and different contemporary Cuban sound that uniquely incorporates elements of jazz, pop and rock.
The production is greatly enhanced with the participation of an impressive array of distinguished guests including American multi-platinum selling pop vocalist Jason Mraz, Canadian singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith as well as tres master Pancho Amat and world-renowned pianist Chucho Valdes.
The Juno Awards (the equivalent to the American Grammys) is the most prestigious award in Canada. This year’s ceremony will be held on April 2, 2006 at 8:00pm at the Halifax Metro Centre in a live televised broadcast on CTV.
Humo de Tabaco, a Globe Star Recordings production, was released in Canada July 2005 and is distributed by Navarre/Universal, and was released in the US on September 2005 by Navarre Distribution.
