Alien Woman: The Making of Lt. Ellen Ripley
Alien Woman: The Making of Lt. Ellen Ripley
by C. Jason Smith, Ximena Gallardo C.

About the book one is told this: "Alien Woman examines the construction of sex and gender in the four Alien science-fiction films. The Alien saga stands alone in presenting an enduring, self-reliant female protaginist, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, who in the first film end up as the sole survivor of the beleaguered starship Nostromo. Subsequent writers and directors in the 1980s and 1990s, left to grapple with this strong female protagonist, re-envision Ripley to fit differing social, political, and cultural imperatives for women. Alien Woman focuses on how these writers and directors have re-written Ripley, and how each revision informs our understanding of women in science-fiction. By examining the creation and commodification of Ripley as female hero, the book provides a useful lens through which to view woman's place in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries."

I got the book for free since I helped contribute to it but I was seriously suprised. It covers all four films and I thought it was gonna be one of those feminist books raving about the strong Ripley since it is a "gender study". To my suprise; it isn't.

It's actually a good read if you're into the Alien-saga. Lot's of fun facts, points of views and "ah ha" moments. It also shares some of the subliminal tricks they've used to attract the audience that frankly I've never thought of before. I swear it gets a lot more fun to watch the series for the 511th time after reading through this book. :)

Sure it IS about Ripley and the first ever kick ass FEMALE action hero and the politics surrounding that. I'm too young to remeber what it was like before Ripley came along so to me it was fun to read about the impact the character / films had.
