American Splenda
Not bad, Kinda generic though, take a look at the real Harvey Pekar. He was kinda off his rocker, "The late show". Nobody really made that part evident. If this movie would not have been all about the good stuff you know this nut would be throwin chairs and the lot. Right??? - Brett , posted 08/31/05

one of my favorite movies
I love this movie, and I'm not a comic book fan. Joyce Brabner really makes the difference in this movie. Funny thing is that my wife identified more with Harvey, and I identified more with Joyce (which has to do with our temperaments and personalities). - David , posted 03/03/05

AMERICAN SPLENDOR
For anyone who's a fan of indie-comics, or just Harvey Pekar's deadpan view of American drudgery.... - Darren , posted 01/11/05

the film is in my film library
Yup, I have to concur. This is one of my fav films of all time. Mainly because it celebrates the atypical male who's appearance as Harvey Pekar might make some women run screaming "get me out of here" but Pekar is both an original and honest voice expressing the angst of physical and psychological loneliness...I believe Pekar is closer to many males than the ones society likes to advertise in magazines and billboards....the mass of men leads lives of quiet desperation...and Pekar, in his own quite way, expressed what so many men feel and long for...... - Universal Friend , posted 08/12/04

The unsung comic book hero's movie
Harvey Pekar is the least likely of comic book hero's. But this is exactly why his story is so original. Based on the mundane and pedestrian life of the real Harvey who's just a middle-aged file clerk from Cleveland. Nothing extraordinary ever happened to him, that is, until he met Bob Crumb.

American Splendor is a good flick in its novel approach to story-telling. It constantly cuts between the real Harvey, the real comic and then the feature. This accomplishes the effect of always reminding you that the story is a real one and will continue for as long as Harvey writes it.

I recommend this movie for any adult who is into comic books. It is not necessarily entertaining enough for young comic book fans looking for the typical action. It's more like the Woody Allen of comic movies. If you know and appreciate Bob Crumb (also another excellent documentary produced by Ridley Scott), you'll love American Splendor. - grasshopper , posted 08/11/04
