BELEZA
i lived in NE brasil from mid 2002 to mid 2003 and it was the time of my life. most brasilians are extremely outgoing, optimistic, and energetic people.
The city where i lived, Natal, has about 1,000,000 people and is surrounded on all sides by white sand beaches and miles of sand dunes.
If you ever end up in Natal, definitely go on a dune buggy ride! the drivers typically ask if you want the ride to be "com emocao ou sem emocao?" which means "with or without emotion?"
great bar scene around town too.
and im not even gonna get started on Carnaval or New Years in Brasil. seriously, the time of my life. - Casey , posted 04/30/06

Why do I have to spend two days in Rio?
I was in Brazil for half a day when I hear the doorbell ring. I open it
and .... to my great surprise .... it was a friend who had just landed
on
this continent as well.

To run into a friend BY COMPLETE CHANCE, in the fifth biggest country
in
the world, on my first day, meant to me that I was in the right place
at
the right time.
All my pre-departure questioning disappeared. ["Why should I go waste
time
in Brazil? Why did I not cancel the flight?"]

I already have a group of Rio native friends I hang out with and I
canceled my trip up to Recife till later.

Life in Rio De Janeiro is so great it is almost difficult to imagine.
It seems almost impossible to have so many genuinely super sweet,
smiley
people in one place.
The physical city itself, with its mountains water inlets and
variations
all over, is sooo worth singing about. Some parts of the city seem very
small-town-like (even if it has one of the greatest population
densities
on earth). Everybody says hi and talks to each other here.
Rio is as close to an urban paradise as I could have imagined. There
are
beaches, mountains and waterfalls right in, or near the city.
There are crazy new architecturally interesting areas and huge old
cobble
stone areas.
There is music, nightlife, art, history, people from around the world
and... surfing.
But, if you are in the wrong part of town with a digital camera at four
in
the morning, don't expect to take the camera home ;-0.
Like almost any big town on earth, some areas are to be avoided anytime
of
day, or night.
One month later:
I have been in Recife/Olinda, Pernambuco (North East Brazil) for a
while
now.
Here is one of the places on earth I feel really at home. The state of
Pernambuco has great people, music and art, as well as decent "summer"
surfing. (Brazil is a true federation, each state having its own music,
myths, cultures, traditions and governments.)
I have five friends who have joined me from around the world here now.
Keep me posted on how you are doing!
Hope all is well,
Love,
