Mixed review of Cingular
I have a tri-band phone with Cingular. I have used it several years in Europe. The first time I went to Europe with it, I called and asked if they had a special calling plan for Europe and I was told, join the plan for $3.00/mo. and it was unlimited calling at 18 cents per minute. I came home to a $2000. phone bill being charged everything from $3.00/minute to $5.00/minute. Miraculously they had a record of my phone call agreement and they honored the 18 cents a minute which reduced the bill to less than $200.

Last year I called again before I went to Europe for three months and got the correct information about the European calling plan of $3.00/mo. and 39 cents a minute. Service was fairly good and I was very judicious about phone calls. I still have Cingular althiugh I can't tell you it's a great choice. The others certainly could be better. One more thing, it seemed virtually impossible to retrieve voicemail from Europe even though they told me how and that I could. It never worked.

Which ever company you choose, you can take your phone number with you. - CHROME , posted 08/27/05

Cingular vs. Verizon
I had verizon for a couple years. Not thrilled with their customer service, but the reception was good even on obscure back roads. I switched to cingular. not a smart move. Now I can't get reception when I'm sitting by my computer - could there be a worse place for my phone not to work? - La Fin DuMonde , posted 02/10/05
I have Cingular
I have Cingular. Service in the metro area is great, but no service at all at my house. (Right now I live in the woods, where no GSM providers exist, so thats to be expected.)

I'm pretty sure they have an option to call within your own group of phones for unlimited no-cost minutes, plus in network minutes are free too.

Verizon has really great wide-area service, but they don't do GSM phones. So don't expect a lot of "extras" from them.

Stay away from Sprint and AT&T. (Although I've heard AT&T Wireless is being bought by Cingular?) - Daniel , posted 03/09/04
