A Match For You
This is perfect for you (based on what you were asking for):

$335 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX7 (made in partnership with Leica)
www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/fro...oogle.asp

5-megapixel effective CCD for images up to 2560 x 1920 pixels
Leica DC-VARIO ELMARIT 3x zoom, equivalent to 35-105mm on a 35mm camera
Optical image stabilization to help prevent camera shake and blurring
Ultra-compact (3.7 x 1.97 x 0.95 inch) and durable metal body
Venus Engine II LSI for robust camera operations
Mega Burst continuous capture @ 3 or 2fps up to 7 images (4 in Fine mode)

You will not believe how great this camera is. It's like alien technology.

The great things about this particular model are the shirtpocket size, the classic understated Leica styling and superior Leica lens, and the gyroscopic image stabilization (which saves many otherwise-lost photos). The downsize of this small camera is a limited range for the optical zoom (3x) but you said that wasn't very important to you.

I currently use a Lumix FX20 - my second Lumix and big brother to this camera. With its 12x optical zoom, it's big and bulky (its main drawback being that it consequently gets left at home sometimes when I'd wished I'd brought it along). It also has the mega optical image stabilizer, which results in a noticeable improvement in my ability to get a sharp handheld shot.

This little shirtpocket model has most of the same electronics and features as mine (including the stabilizer) - in a tiny package. I'd like to have an FX7 as a second camera, and always have it with me in my jacket pocket or my backpack- you know, in case I'm in a coffee shop and get asked to shoot a CD cover (it's happened!)

The Venus-II chip for image processing and the fine Leica Elmarit lens in this tiny package add up to the kind of instrument that nobody could have imagined just a few years ago. The price has come down a bit and is what I'd consider to be dang reasonable, and coincidently just what you'd hoped to be spending.
