RIP OFF ALERT! Do not buy from DEMON MUSIC GROUP
this is from Legion of Green Men's blog at myspace.com/logm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please DO NOT buy anything from DEMON MUSIC GROUP, in particular DO NOT under any circumstances buy the BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO WORLD LOUNGE, from sub-imprint Nascente. These scumbags have still not paid our "advance" despite MONTHS of polite and pointed emails from me. They do not respond to my messages, and in my opinion are generally untrustworthy and inefficient.
In a nutshell, they contacted us in summer of 2005, to ask to include our track For Maria, Wherever I May Find Her on their upcoming compilation of world inspired club music. They were initially very professional, and insistent on the rapid return of contracts to enable them to go to press by October, but they had mis-quoted the title and had it listed as For Maria, Wherever I MIGHT Find Her (the astute among you will recognize the obvious reference to Simon and Garfunkel, and its MAY not MIGHT) and they had the publishing info incorrect. We corrected them and signed the deal memo.
Then a month or so later they contacted us to verify the info for the copy to be included in the set. Again, it contained several errors which we again corrected. We still had no signed deal memo and no advance.
In late October we received a package of 3 copies of the CD set. It has us listed as follows:
Legion of Green Men For Maria, Wherever I Might Find Her (3:33)
[Africa/UK]
(unidentified) Copyright Control
"Not too much is known about this obscure tune which is criminal for such a lovely track featuring the legendary Miriam Makeba. It only received a release on a small independent label out of Canada. Thankfully we have unearthed it here for your listening pleasure. You lucky people."
Gee thanks for the kind words, but it was released simultaneously in the UK by SWIM RECORDS. The track title is wrong, we're from Canada, not the UK, and we had provided them with names, so why do they list us as unidentified? The audio sounds like they couldn't get all the permissions they wanted for their initial track list and had to edit out those tracks. As a result the very beginning and ending of our track is clipped. Minor points perhaps, but on the whole, very irritating. AND STILL NO PAYMENT OF THE ADVANCE OR CONTRACT.
When we contacted them, they apologized, and then asked for an invoice from us. Previous to this, there had been no mention of the need for an invoice in order to be paid. Thats STALLING TACTICS, plain n simple. We faxed one right away.
Then in December we received a cryptic phone message from the business affairs department asking for a signed contract... Could this be the contract THEY NEVER SENT US? Weve been bounced from one person to the next, trying to get this sorted out.
In January I couriered the signed agreement at last and another copy of the invoice to them. In MARCH, I had to send them a curt letter asking what the hell was up, before they finally returned my copy of the contract... but STILL NO PAYMENT. When I prodded them for payment, they said they needed another invoice. If they received the signed contract, they received my invoice after all, the two documents were in the SAME ENVELOPE.
Now they're saying that the reason they haven't sent me a payment is because their finance department has stopped paying people by cheque and they need my bank details for a wire. NOT USING CHEQUES? You're telling me you pay your phone bill, pay for office supplies, and coffee for the lunch room ALL WITH BANK TRANSFERS? Sure, its the 21st century, but what business doesn't have a chequebook? Thats bullshit. And the least they could have done was EXPLAIN that to me MONTHS ago, so I could have provided them with the bank details, which I have since done.
AND STILL NOTHING. I've had it. I've lost my patience. I'm so very much NOT impressed with DEMON MUSIC GROUP that I have to share it with all of you and warn you of the way they treat independents across the ocean. Musicians, do not license any music to them and listeners, DO NOT BUY ANY OF THE BEGINNERS GUIDE CDS. - Lexifer , posted 06/28/06
