Big Time Fun Band
The joy this band has doing a number is so contagious that i go into high gear every time i hear them. what a glorious sound! top notch, well-trained performers giving very enthusiastic interpretations of classical music is the ultimate for music lovers. i hope like hell they catch on because i want every CD they do.
to have that much talent in one studio is almost an orgy of sound. the snare drum being played with such abandon is enough to make anyone giggle with glee. this music
is perfect for introducing the classics to any music appreciation class. to say that this band could be responsible for countless converts to operatic and symphonic experiences is an understatement.
in addition to the great musicians, the vocalists add a celebreation of emotional interpratation that is more than just a bonus.
they are so earthy and real that they bring the
classics to the present day and make them live a modern life. their sound is immediate and transfixing. i am a fan. for sure. - jo , posted 04/23/06

East Village Opera Company @ Great American Music Hall, SF 01/13/06
Blending opera and classical music with rock requires exceptionally delicate balance. Rock should be about the wrong side of the tracks, and Opera has firmly established itself as music of the ruling class. Did Metallica do a good job melding with the SF Philharmonic? That may have been the benchmark. Is Punk Rock Orchestra a viable contender for best classical/rock frappe? Been so long since I seen 'em (2002) and hear they've grown and changed so much, don't think I'm qualified to answer yet.

But, what I learned tonight at the EVOC performance is Queen may have been the ultimate rock opera band. When EVOC decided to "rock-out" the lead guitar turned into Brian May and songs sounded like variations on Bohemian Rhapsody. And I mean that in the best way.
This band has fabulous talent, just like American Idol. It's so professional and glossy. And much of the crowd was eating it up. Into it. The lead singer sounded a lot like George Michael singing in Italian. The female singer sounded a lot like... well, a lot of gorgeous, generically perfect female voices. When the keyboard player broke out into an Emenem rap at the end of the set they set many heads in motion. It was vaguely like watching Germans pretending to be cowboys and Indians.

They were pushing T-shirts so I guess they're expecting a young audience. I wonder if they should have been selling EVOC cuff links and logo wine decanters instead? I need cuff links.
Will this band be the next big thing here in the States? Songs in Italian and no mission statement, I doubt it. But what the hell do I know about the taste of the record buying public? I hardly ever buy CDs or download.... I have KALX!

Here's what I wish this band would do: Put the strings up front! That was the edgiest thing about the whole show, when those lovely ladies on the strings started to do those really loud stuccato bow attacks and the hair starts to stand up on the back of yer rock and roll neck. That was when I started to see what this marriage could mean.

It was nice to listen to and I love the venue. A beautiful, ornately detailed music hall from another century. A perfect place to witness the obviously hard work and dedicated artistry that went into these detailed romantic opera tunes. EVOC are really good but way too far into Andrew Lloyd Webber territory to appeal to me. - vincE , posted 02/01/06
