A dark and haunting sci-fi anime series
*Ergo Proxy* is a 23-episode anime series which initially takes place in a totalitarian domed city called Romdeau, built after an ecocalypse that brought an endless winter on Earth. All of its citizens live under the watch of their companion androids (called “autoreivs”) and are required to be unemotional, unquestioning workers and consumers. The story begins with Inspector Re-l Mayar investigating a recent upsurge in autoreivs who've been infected with a virus which gives them self-awareness, and the escape of Proxy, a mysterious life form who seems to be very important in the eyes of the city's rulers. Vincent Law, a lowly immigrant working for the Autoreiv Control Bureau, seems to hold the keys of both issues—and of Romdeau's and Re-l's futures.
I highly recommend this series to all science fiction aficionados, as it addresses many cogent themes such as ecocalypse, technology addiction, nature vs. nurture, control and emancipation, filial and predatory relationships, and interpersonal responsibility in a subtle and thought-provoking way. The show been marketed a cyberpunk anime, but only the three first episodes are so; it is more accurately described as a science fiction tragedy under strong philosophical, psychological, and mythological influences. Some people might find it confusing and pretentious, but those who are looking for mature anime should give it a try.
