Food for Thought
I love Eric Schlosser. FFN is far more engaging than his follow-up, Reefer Madness. Having been an animal rights activist in a former life, I didn't walk away with a lot of new info., but as a new parent, it's a great reminder to start your kids off right from the start. - Source , posted 07/07/06

fast food...blehhhh
wow. if this book won't make a person reconsider his / her eating habits if they include fast food, then nothing will...
it is truly disgustingly necessary...make this required reading in middle school / jr high school!!! - skadi , posted 03/08/06

Good
This book is in my doctor's office and every time I am in there I pick it up and learn something new. Great book. I would buy it if I could. - Amanda , posted 01/27/06

Fast Food Nation
It's a sharply written book that not only shows the underbelly of fast food, but it also shows the way that agribusiness has made our diets less healthy.

And, I didn't eat any fast food for a year afterwards. - Brian , posted 01/06/06

excellent
a sociology book about U.S. culture in the 2nd half of the 20th century more than an overview of fast food. Very insightful - John , posted 12/28/05

old news
Wow what a genuine sherlock holmes. "I'm going to eat a shitload of supersized bigmacs and fries, i wonder what will happen?!?" UM no fucking shit. I really don't need to watch you do this to yourself. I doubt this movie made one single obese person lay off the cheeseburgers. - Bertha , posted 11/27/05

great, easy read includes a lot of history
I loved Fast Food Nation, finding it accessible for both meat-eaters and vegetarians.

It goes back to the history of the fast food industry, including how the rise of the automobile and increased mobility of the average american led for people to want to find the same restaurant in every city they visit. It follows with the idea that as demand for fast, convenient food grew, so did the need to make it inexpensive, and thus the agri-businesses that we know today were born.

Each idea is well developed but not overly beat, and painstakingly researched. - Jenni , posted 06/16/05

eh. well ya know.
this book was well written, i'll give it that. my enjoyment was however hindered by the fact that i was forced to read it for school. and i'm a strict vegetarian. i don't recommend it to any vegetarians. it is incredibly nauseating. i haven't eaten ANYTHING at mc d's since i read this book. and i have definetly reconsidered some of my previous idealisms about the disney corporation. read it, it's enlightening, but don't eat a big lunch first. - Beverly , posted 03/20/05

Disturbingly Insightful
This book exposes a lot of what the fast food industry doesn't want you to see, from horrid labor conditions to mistreatment of livestock. It'll make you think twice before you bite into your next Big Mac. - Fredo , posted 11/23/04

Upton Sinclair Jr
Sinclair once said he aimed for America's heart and hit its stomach. Schlosser aims for both, peppering this insanely thorough investigation with woeful tales of downtrodden meatpackers and overworked teenage clerks.

The aforementioned classes are deftly conflicted with restaurant chiefs like the legendary David Brinker (of Bennigan's and Chili's fame), a freuqent contributor to the Republican party and champion of class inequity. His response to a proposed increase in the minimum wage: "Strike me dead!"

Just how convincing is this book? For the sake of my own health, not to mention the welfare of others, I swore off meat halfway through the read. - Patrick , posted 10/16/04

What every fast food consumer should know
Do not miss this modern day muckracking. The scary part is ... all of us drive in and drive out of fast food restaurants every week. What we don't think about, or what we don't want to think about is revealed in this quick read. WARNING: not for the faint of heart - Amber , posted 10/06/04
