Something to look for...
This two track demo from NYC's own Invidia is an interesting offering. The overall genre affect is one of death metal with some slight thrashing influences keeping things from being typical. Invidia have managed to make melodic death metal that DOESN'T lack energy or balls. This being said, the band is still finding their entire voice. The playing is top notch, the production is very good for a demo and the basic feel is all here. All this band needs to do is bring their songwriting to a place that they make themselves entirely seperate and irreplacable in the extreme metal movement, in which extremity is often more important than quality songcraft.
The songcraft is highly complex and a few riffs actually catch the ear and will entertain you in the moments you put the CD away. "Keeping the Faith" is the superior track in my view as it blends the death/trash mix extremely well without losing the nessecary aspects of either. The songcraft is a little scattershot (my only "real" issue with the CD) finding the band doing a "kitchen sink" approach to writing in which they show you EVERY single riff and turn they can in each song. If this is what they were going for, they have done so brilliantly. Some of the riffs though, stand out more than others and it would be interesting to see the band develop these movements to play more like a movie than a collection of skilled invidual compositions.
This release shows a band with a lot of technical skill and growing potential. If they can hone their songs into slightly more "dramatic" and composed works instead of "lets beat your face in from each angle" they might be able to transcend the typical death metal movement and do something that few others have been able to do with the death/thrash crossover riffery. "Keeping the Faith" is a good tune, and shows that this band could be something more if they continue to develop their concept.
Keep an eye out for the band...there should be better things to come...
