I've burned journals before. They don't really want to burn, since air can't get between the pages. However if you start with a small bon fire and toss the journals in one at a time and stir the fire you can burn through them all in a night. Stirring with a big stick works well. You can also soak the journals in white gas, still tossing them in one at a time, they will burn much hotter. BUT be careful, keep the fuel away from the fire. You are allowed to burn on Ocean Beach, to avoid any police bs, don't bring glass and don't burn wood with nails in it, unless you are fully prepared to stay till the fire is out and you can recover those nails with a magnet rake.
