Quirky vocals on top of a more conventional band...
I wouldn't have know Mike Doughty from beans, if not for Soul Coughing. I loved Soul Coughing - saw them like 5 times when I lived in Chicago. They put on one of the best shows I have ever seen one night at the Cabaret Metro. It was one of those nights that makes you wish you would enjoy squeezing into a hot smoky venue for the rest of your life. Crowd going crazy with frenetic energy, everyone knew all the words to all the songs except for the ones that Doughty made up on the spot.

This new album has some of the same quirkiness, but on top of a more conventional sounding band. The drummer who used to beat his kit senseless has been replaced with a more subtle percussionist. The upright base has been replaced with all kinds of studio embellishment and instrumentation. I don't know if Doughty is even playing the guitar anymore. But he is still singing and from the sounds of it, still writing too. Still quirky as ever. I love this stuff. I am on the eigth track and have not yet even gotten to the one that caught my attention on Radio Paradise (which is how I became aware of this release in the first place). From the rounder sounds of this album, my guess is that this album will have a little more mass appeal than Soul Coughing ever enjoyed. It's sounds like Doughty has mellowed a bit, but so have I so I bought the album off of iTunes music store halfway through my first listen on Radio Paradise. - Brian , posted 05/10/05
