An all-time Classic- Nolan is the new Hitchcock
When I like a film, I consume it like an album. To me a great film is like a great piece of music- you want to watch it over and over again. Memento is an amazing tone poem, dealing with the elusive character of memory. Nolan's message is that memory is not to be trusted and in a way all of us are amnesiacs. The stylistic shifts and lilting rhythms of the story are addictive and the triumverate of stars- the masterful Guy Pearce buttressed by Joe Pantoliano and Carrie Ann Moss play off of each other like a jazz combo. Pearce doesn't work enough and he should be a major star- his acting almost transcends acting in this film. His spot-on portrayal of a glad-handling California yuppie whose world has collapsed is all the more remarkable when you consider the fact that he's an anglo-Australian. (I have a pet theory that one day soon all the leading actors in Hollywood will be from the British Commonwealth (UK, Canada, Oz, etc)or Ireland, and it's coming to pass fairly quickly, no?)
An absolute must-see from the Hitchcock of the 21st century.
