blockbuster online is so much better
i had netflix, any new release had a long wait, it seemed to take longer and longer to get my movies, and overall i got annoyed with them for various reasons. so i switched to blockbuster online, I still get 3 movies at a time, but i can turn them in at the store for free movies in the store, and then they are also marked in, so i don't have to wait the time for them to receive it before they ship a new movie. far superior in my opinion, i also get a coupon every month which is good in the store for a movie or a game. so every movie in the mail also means a free movie in the store. it kicks netflix' ass - Katie , posted 12/28/06

I HIGHLY recommend Netflix!!!
I dropped by subcription to cable television, stopped watching network television and just use the television as a monitor to watch DVDs. Netflix is the best bang for your buck, plus.... get this... THEY DELIVER! - , posted 09/03/06

Changed the way I watch
Love Netflix - but I have problems with the postman. I watch less current TV and more things that I'm really interested in. Plus I love renting TV shows that were on cable (since we have Netflix instead) and I can keep them until I'm able to finish the whole disc. - Sandra , posted 05/04/06

They used to be cool
Too bad economics caught up with them. If the matter is shipping I don't see why they don't just chare a little more to counter-balance their more active clients effects. POO on big industry; they're always cutting corners. - Scott E. , posted 04/29/06

Convenient but there are better......
If you want a better selection of Indie/foreign films switch over to GreenCine! AND they're local! (and oh how I miss living near Le Video! I've heard Reel Video in Berkeley is pretty comparable though)

I personally don't subscribe to any of them cause a.) I have a satellite dish with HBO and can't justify the extra expense, and b.) I have such an incredibly hard time making myself sit down and actually watch a movie straight through! I tape movies off TV and sometimes it takes me a MONTH to watch! ADD perhaps???

I think these DVD services are incredibly convenient but personally (like others have said) I like to physically go INTO a store and select my movie....and look at the cute workers :) - Dina , posted 04/27/06

Netflix just isnt for you!
Netflix isnt for you! Really, They want YOU and Especially YOU to go to your favorite local
video store that you like so much with the cute clerks. Hell, think of it this way.. due to netflix providing competition at a mass level, big shitty stores LIKE Block Buster, which edits & censors movies, & blah blah blah, have a bigger issue to worry about than squeezing out
the local smaller mom and pops video stores where the selection is invariably more eclectic
and or nitche (enter your favorite local video store & ta da!). The Presence of netflix with its wierd yet managable delivery mechanism provides a totally seperate and aparently foreign to you movie wathcing experience. Please, stick with whats your used to if it bothers you so much.. And next time.. just pounce over the counter at the cute video clerk.
Make it a cinematic moment.. :)

a brief summary for my review
They need to widen the focus a wee bit and add in things like Mystery from the BBC and other stuff; we won't be dropping our memberships at the stores anytime soon. The corporate feed is disturbing, but it's fun to think of my taste in movies totally fucking their absurdly shallow rating data.

pretty good, better than their press
after we found out about the slow downs to the most frequent customers I shot a nastygram to the president and got a phone call from a nice customer service person. We got a month free in return for filling out a spreadsheet with every disk we got for a month- when we got it and when we returned it.

We've been a netflix customer for over two years - in the "old days" netflix would ship us a new disk the same day they received our return - so we got 3 day turn around. Now we get pretty consistant 4 day turnaround - we mail monday, they get it tuesday, they ship weds, we receive thurs. We both ran the numbers on our account for the past 6 months and we were paying something like $3 per disk - it was pretty good. the shipping delays issue mostly affects people who want first run movies, which isn't us, I wish they were as fast as they used to be, but .... - onlineAlchemy , posted 04/26/06

Love 'em! Granted, it is sometimes a drag to get a movie you're not in the mood for, but their selection is awesome and they're freakishly fast. I've had a couple problems with receiving broken DVDs or them not receiving one I sent back, but they've always corrected the problem right away. Plus, they *reduced* their rates a while back. - Jεnεllε , posted 04/26/06

Love 'em, but they *could* diversify just a wee bit.
They don't have "Shanks"? What the fuck? Otherwise, they kick so much ass! The bulk of what I watch on a monitor is provided by them. Totally worth the money. - , posted 04/26/06

never used it, but I can see why I would...
But as it happens, I live across the street from a well-stocked Hollywood Video with a monthly unlimited rentals program, and I actually *like* wandering the aisles deciding what I want to watch. I suspect with Netflix I'd share Turtle's rant about always having a stack of movies I wasn't in the mood to watch. - Unsubscribed , posted 04/26/06

works for me
I've heard complaints about how Netflix will slow down shipments to folks who rapidly view and return the disks. Somehow I haven't hit that threshold, and the movies usually show up in 1 day. On the rare occasion that a disk has arrived damaged, they will instantly ship me a new one without waiting for me to return the defective one. - Unsubscribed , posted 04/26/06

I love Netflix!
I've been able to watch so many movies I would have never had the opportunity to watch! And television series on DVD as well! - Unsubscribed , posted 04/26/06

hated it
i had netflix for a while, but the dvds never fit in my mailbox. so the mail man would either cram them in my mailbox, thus making them nearly impossible to extract whole, or leave them outside my mailbox. living in sf this shortly gave rise to my netflix getting stolen, so i eventually had to cancel the service in order to not risk being forced to buy the dvds that i didn't even receive! i don't really like ballbuster much either... last time i was there they tried to con me into some sort of premium membership when all i wanted was to pay and go home... but that's for another poll i guess. ;) - Paul , posted 04/26/06

I dig it.
Yeah, like that time I used to spend wandering up and down the isle of video stores looking for something worth watching was so incredibly enriching. - Jim , posted 04/26/06

Rageflix!
Good God, Turtle, that's one of the best rants I've read in ages! Superb! Kudos to you, crazy woman. But I agree. They're yet another excuse for people to disengage with the real world. - Unsubscribed , posted 04/26/06

Netflix Sux
Ohhh Nextflix, you think you are all cool with your made up name, playing off peoples love of the internet and their flix, you think you are sooooo much better than Blockbuster but I hate you you stupid clogging up the mail system, move pushing, pinko, patent abusing shit fuck excuse for a company. You know what, I like to wander aimlessly through video stores, picking out my videos before I just have them sent directly to my home. Cover art matters in my movie selecting thank you very much. What if I'm not in the mood to watch a comedy OK! You just send me whatever you want, what about me? What if tonight I want to watch a coming of age homosexual love story, and you send me Dances with Wolves. Fuck that shit! Wow really convenient, thanks soooo much. So I don't have a lot of friends OK, and when I go pick out my movie I fucking cherish those few seconds my eyes lock with the cute young movie buff behind the counter, and his voice cracks as he tells me he digs on my movie selections. I bet you would be just so happy if I never left my house again, if I just sat there wile you sent me the movies you want me to watch on Wednesdays. Thanks a whole fucking lot for trying to ruin my life. You suck. - Turtle , posted 04/28/06
