Middle Harbor - mixed feelings
Although I love to go there, and agree that it's a well-kept secret, and never crowded, I find the frequent polica patrols there annoying and imposing on the peace of the place. I've been stopped twice and asked to drop driftwood I've collected, or asked not to walk on a part of the beach that seems to be perpetually closed. Signs EVERYWHERE tell you what you can and connot do there, and I also find this disturbing to the experience. A more laissez-faire attitude by Park Police would make this a much better place to go. Best Park Nobody Knows About
Recently the Port of Oakland turned what used to be the Naval Supply Depot into a pretty nice park, right in the middle of the busy port.

Hardly anybody knows about it, probably because you wouldn't stumble onto it unless you worked at the port, which means there's always tables and BBQs available.

They're restoring what used to be the middle harbor back to its original tidal wetlands state, which is pretty amazing, considering where this is located.

Anyway, nice park and a nice view of the ship traffic in the Estuary. - Pete , posted 10/05/04
