Biometrics? Soon...I hope.
Now let me see something here. A while back I went to get a new Ontario drivers license. I walked into the bureau with little trouble and a few shekels later I had a new temporary permit with the real hardcard to be delivered in a few weeks. I'm fairly loud and boisterous so everybody in the facility knew what I was up to.

Anyhoo, yesterday the new hardcard arrived by snailmail and TA-DOW my picture is as pretty as ever. But one thing I noticed about the pleasant blue letter that accompanied the hardcard was the accompanying CHANGE OF ADDRESS form. Now, I can't tell you if this is a good idea or not, nor can I speak for any members of the Ontario government, but if I was in charge of security around those parts, there are a few questions I'd be asking:

- Why is a CHANGE OF ADDRESS form sent with a new drivers license? Doesn't logic state that having just visited the licensing bureau to obtain the new license, one would have already gone about changing their address on the drivers license?

- Why is a CHANGE OF ADDRESS form sent with a new drivers license? With the envelope CLEARLY MARKED "Ontario" and "Ministry of Transportion", a potential Identity Thief need only wait until garbage collection day to obtain this form which contains both my drivers license no. and current address. The thief then need only a stamp courtesy Canada Post to get another hardcard issued...

- Why is a CHANGE OF ADDRESS form sent with a new drivers license? Magnetic swipe card readers are everywhere. Does my drivers license contain my drivers license no. encoded in this stripe? If so, do the establishments that use magnetic stripe reading cards for the purposes of data collection have in place to ensure that this data is secure?

- Why is a CHANGE OF ADDRESS form sent with a new drivers license? Given the lengths to which counterfeiters go these days, are these forms securely encoded with proper security watermarks and other identifying designations in the event that someone does try to obtain a card. If someone has access to a high quality printing facility AND volumes of data from magnetic stripe collection, how quickly could Identity Theft on a massive scale occur?

I'm ready for iris scanning...are you? - Unsubscribed , posted 10/21/05
