Oracle Bones
"From the acclaimed author of River Town comes a rare portrait, both intimate and epic, of twenty-first-century China as it opens its doors to the outside world."

Hessler focuses on the lives of people he knows. The account uses their experiences to show how China's experiment in a market economy effects everything from peoples lives, to the character of the cities.

Also He describes the reaction of these people to events like the Bombing os the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia, the collision of an American Military plane and a Chinses Fighter, also President Bush's Visit and the attack on the World Trade Center.

This uniquely personal travelogue puts a human face on China's people and offers some practical insight on the Nations complex politcal structure.
An excellent read.
also interesting is "River Town," an account of Hessler experiences teaching english in the Sichuan province.
