interesting discussion on individual needs vs. political responsibilities
this is a black and white, lesser known film about the jazz and beat era. some of the film's manner is stiff due to the time period, but the content is pretty radical. especially the seedy nightclub scenes and beat parties. but my point in recommending it is that among other things, it explores the concept of individual satisfication vs. social responsibility. specifically, Poitier's character struggles with the liberation of race in paris, vs. the civil rights movement happening in the states. bringing us back to the "should I stay or should I go" discussion of late. plus, as I said, Paul Newman is a dish. - Unsubscribed , posted 11/03/04
