The performance was gorgeous and unsettling at the same time. The soundtrack and images of Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation were put together better than what I recall of Koyaanisqatsi (I saw about 20 years ago). The performers were excellent and the soundtrack composition wasn't as repetitive as I recall other Phllip Glass music. Having the music performed live gave it an immediacy and depth that otherwise couldn't be acheived. I admit that sometimes I drifted from the film and watched the musicians... there's a universe in one of those egg rattles alone. The focus of the movie was indigenous people of Africa, Middle East and South America, and their cultures... keep in mind there's no narration or dialogue of any sort. The images of are non-industrial cultures doing things by hand and the audience has the opportunity to study these activities, often in slow motion. What struck me was how healthy so many of the people looked compared to Americans. What also stood out was the lack of provision for personal safety (and sometimes decency) the scenes of work, housing and transportation revealed. If life safety is of no real concern in the everyday, I guess the concept of suicide bombers is not that radical. As I'm hinting, people in Industrialized, first world nations probably should be learning more about what makes less wealthy global citizens tick. What's nice about a presentation with no dialogue or plot, is that you as the viewer get to bring your own assumptions and interpretations to the screen and mull them over for 100 minutes. It might change your perspective or it might simply reinforce what you already believe... This was a three night run of the Qatsi trilogy and I only saw this one. - vincE , posted 02/21/06 |
