Review of Lucas’ Poi workshop
For those of you who missed Lucas Poi workshop, here’s a quick review:

We were moved into a circle by order of level from beginners to advanced. We started off with some long arm spins and practiced turning with it, then mixing that in with other movements, like weaves. Soon, he worked with each glob of people, generally giving you the breakdown of a movement, training it and drilling it with you til you could almost get a very sloppy version of it, verbally explained whatever was still wrong, then went to work with the next group. This was fantastic as it didn’t put too much pressure to get the move, as they take a while to develop. These were not fixed groups, so you jumped into whatever crowd was learning what you were interested in. Also, Mark was floating around helping out which was great because he has a totally different teaching style than Lucas. Sometimes Lucas made no sense to me and Mark made it very clear and other times visa versa.

Quick example of the globs of levels and what they were learning:
Beginners – weaves, butterfly, over the head butterfly, windmill, antispins
Intermediate – reverse weaves, buzzsaw’s in a circle (going from forwards to reverse), cateye’s and ellipses, hand following
Not quite advanced – watermills, 1.5 weaves, antispin with a big circle

It wasn’t a formal workshop. We told him if we were interested in something in particular and if we weren’t, he’d come up with something challenging for our level. I think everyone preferred it this way.

I also wanted to Thank Mark for hosting this at his place, helping to teach and providing ample water and bug spray and Irene for setting things up! And both of them, cause I forgot my poi and borrowed theirs.

And if you missed it, he was interested in coming back on a semi regular basis to keep teaching! So let’s keep spreading the word so we are able to keep his trips up here profitable enough to warrant coming back! I know I would definitely like to get more 1.5 stuff and between the legs stuff. - Asyia , posted 09/29/08
