wonderful vibe
Walking in to the front door of Rongo the place immediately felt wonderful. There is a wide variety of interesting people to talk to and things to do, or it's just great to be by one's self and chill out, looking at the wide variety of art, reading from the fine library, sitting in the wood fired tub... - Bruce , posted 01/29/07

A very cool place to stay!
We spent four nights at Rongo in Dec and had a fantastic time. The backpackers is situated right in town (really a very small hamlet), with views of the surrounding mountains and a stones' throw from the town pub and restaurant. The backpackers is clean, staffed by very friendly folk, and you can count on a personal visit from the proprietor, who enjoys a good chat and always has a smile. If you're keen, you can do a set out back in the radio station or just chill out in the lounge and enjoy what's on. There's always interesting folk passing through and the start of the Heaphy track is only 10 minutes away. Great place. Looking forward to returning. - Kathy , posted 01/22/07

Best Backpackers in New Zealand
Rongo Backpackers & Gallery in Karamea on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand is a great place to relax and chill out in one of the most stunningly scenic parts of New Zealand. The backpackers has a community radio station, a fire bath, which is great to soak in under the stars, organic vegetable gardens, a great art gallery, wireless Internet, beautiful gardens, including an awesome cactus garden, the place is clean and comfortable and the people very warm and friendly. - Paul Murray , posted 01/21/07
