Doesnt do it for me...
I did not think this was a great book. It was quirky, odd and sad, and dwindled without clear meaning. The story centres around a poor pre-pubescent boy in his strange growing world...one does reflect on the true weirdness of people whilst reading, and is transported to territories I'm glad to have left behind with this book. - clover , posted 11/09/06

In love with Augusten ! ;-)
If your a fan of David Sedaris... u will love Augusten Burroughs humor and style... This book was recommended by my "Metrosexual" boss... I found myself not wanting to put it down as well as laughing out loud on public transportation.. As a gay child, I so related to a lot of the humor and feelings the young Augusten felt. Not just a book for gay men of course!
:-) Anyone that I have recommended to read this book thanked me later and went out to buy his next book "DRY" which is basically a continuation of the life of Augusten...
A must read ... I am actually looking forward to the movie version early next year...

Good book. Interesting, but not enough for a second book. He didn't need to continue, this would have been the perfect ending. Go on to other stories-this one is done. - fire , posted 08/06/05

fascinating, funny, but completely disturbing
The story is of a young boy who goes to live with the dyfunctional family of his mother's psychiastrist after she has a mental breakdown. It draws you in and is both funny and absorbing, but at the same time, there are parts that are pretty unpleasant. I enjoyed it, but others may not. - Jenni , posted 06/16/05

Poor Augie
Fortunately Augusten is able to provide his horrible ordeal with a comic approach. Totally commendable! I also loved his adult sequel, "Dry". - Aprilla , posted 03/31/05

Excellent yet disturbing account of his life
This real, shocking account of the author's life takes you through things you never thought any living person could go through. To say his life was a "Rollercoaster" would be an understatement. I could not put this one down. Even when it made me a bit queasy. - Kayla , posted 09/18/04
