STRAY CAT ROCK: SEX HUNTER
STRAY CAT ROCK: SEX HUNTER (1970)
Despite its title, this is not really a pinku eiga.
It's more like a Japanese version of Switchblade
Sisters (which the "Stray Cat Rock"series
predates). Still, this film would be right at home
(and might've even played) at my favorite
grindhouses like the King Theatre on Vineyard St.
in Wailuku, or the Hawaii, Liberty, and Asian
Twin Theatres on Oahu (ever notice how those
"historic Hawaii Theatre" ads always neglect to
mention its long stint as a sleazy Japanese
grindhouse?). This films deals with a Dagger
Debs/Silver Daggers-type relationship between
the cool girl gang led by Mako (Meiko Kaji of
Female Convict Scorpion) and the Eagles (what
a lameass name), led by the Baron. The Eagles
are a Willys jeep driving gang of loser who look
too old to be J.D.'s and too wimpy to be yakuza.
The interconnected storylines all deal with the
Baron's hatred of hapa guys. (Being hapa myself,
I knew there was a reason I hated this guy!) Mako
won't put up with the Baron's racist crap, so he
decides to pimp out the girl gang to a bunch of date
rapists. Big mistake! Mako saves the day... with a
Molotov cocktail. That's only a small sampling.
Anyone who drooled over KILL BILL really needs to
watch the real thing instead. The closing shot of
Meiko Kaji is a classic. Strangely, I can only find
this film (the middle of the series) available in the
U.S.
