First of all I did not read the book. The movie lost my interest in about 20 minutes. I can't think of any compelling reason to read it. -  Bobzilla

I like the story but I find it is more of an interesting way to get into the whole Grail mysteries than a groundbreaking masterpiece in itself. It would be a shame to not read "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail" and "The Dead Sea Scroll Deception" by Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh since they offer much of the background info for this story. Dan Brown is a moron. He's not very good at writing and while he had a GREAT concept, he had horrible, poorly constructed charecters. Dan Brown just suckered 40 million hardcover copies of his mediocre book worldwide! A marketing genius! And the movie, c'mon! I mean Tom Hanks, laughable! Is it a cartoon? Then "Opie", Ron Howard, as the director! What is this "Cacoon 7" ? The only reason I would see this movie would be for the painting masterpieces! An easy, fun read, and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. But I'm puzzled as to why it's become such a best seller. Poorly written, poorly plotted and all the ideas in it about Mary Magdalene and the Templars and Jesus have been around for ages. What's the appeal, here? It's one thing to write a slap dash crappy mystery with two dimensional characters, a mind numbingly predictable plot, and attrocious dialogue. It's another thing to preface it with a shit load of intellectual dishonesty. I'm dissapointed that so many in this country found it to be a revelation. 'Wait, you mean the Catholic Church is Mysogynistic?! You mean to tell me the Bible was written and edited by mortal men?! You mean to tell me Christianity borrows from previous traditions?!' The perfect read if you have a liberal arts education and want to pat yourself on the back for how cultured you are when you get the references the author makes in the story. The writing is pure schlock! The plot is ridiculous and the characters poorly drawn. It'll make a great movie. The only positive of this book is that it introduced a few ideas to a mainstream audience. But read Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" for the conspiracy, and a host of well-researched books for the historical/religious analysis ( " The Cathedral of the Black Madonna", "The Jesus Mystery", "The God of Ecstasy", "The Complete Gospels", ...). - Christopher , posted 02/09/06 |

the meat of the da vinci code is based on two books. first holy blood, holy grail and second, the templar revelation. holy blood, holy grail came first in 1982 and was groundbreaking. the book is even referenced in da vinci code and a character in the book is an amalgam of the authors. the second book expanded on holy blood, holy grail and is a more current addition to the templar grail literature. ok, so then, da vinci code... it's sort of like the celestine prophecy of grail literature. it takes some very insightful material, boils it down to a fifth grade reading level and uses the page turner thriller as a delivery system. to his credit, brown is a much better writer than redfield, the author of the celestine prophecy, so he's able to create a better action story to move his central agenda forward. i personally accept the bulk of the holy blood, holy grail "hypothesis" as a legitimate explanation for why the templars were burned at the stake and why the gnostic gospels are so "heretical." i believe that the catholic church has a strong interest invested in keeping subversive history marginalized and while i don't think that 100% of the story has surfaced yet, i think that the historians who are working with the grail lineage are onto far more than most fundamentalists would like to believe. the book is averaging three and a half stars on tribe. that's about where i'd put my rating. but since i can only vote in full stars, i'll round up and give the book four stars. it deserves the extra half-star just for being one of those subversive media viruses that gets into the mainstream consciousness. - Shady , posted 01/19/06 |

It took me 2 weeks to read the first half of the book, then once I got to the 2nd half I couldn't put the book down and finished that half in one night. It's a very good mystery book and kept me at the edge during the 2nd half. However, as somone who was raised as a Christian/Catholic since birth.....the details of the story were very disappointing to me. I felt as if everything that I have been taught was all a lie. This was a fun easy book to read. I thought it was very interesting that the majority of the world was Pagan(earth worshipers) and the Christian religion came along and tried to push the goddess off the map. Im glad the sacred femenin is still intact. - joseph , posted 09/27/05 |

The writer put a lot of effort into this book but the plot, so promising at first fell apart and began to go in circles and was just too incredible after they stole the armored truck. Well, it had a really slow start and I had to deduct points because of the pretentious references to Paris and "Great Art Appreciation". In the middle, it sped up a bit with the historical bits (are these or could they be the actual facts?). One of my museum studies profs recommended this book and I was looking forward to reading it because there aren't that many museum-themed novels out there. But I was sorely disappointed in this book. First, well, I'm happy the albino leagues protested because of the albino villain, hehehe. Second point, well, the characters just didn't seem to be that well thought out. The writing seemed to be pretty freshman creative writing. I'm sick to death about hearing about this book, but I thought I would weigh in. For those of you who enjoy pulp thrillers, DVC is quick and exciting read. For those of you who study religious history, it's a frustrating, garbled mess. Brown's reach far, far exceeds his grasp when it comes to alternative Biblical history, and he gets several facts just plain wrong. If your fancy is tickled by the ideas about Jesus that this book brings up, I strongly recommend the Templar Revelation by Clive Picknett and Lynne Prince. The Baigent and Leigh material is a bit iffy, and Gnosis magazine (among others) conclusively proved the Priory of Sion to be a hoax several years back. Another valuable alternative history of Christ can be found in Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas' book the Second Messiah. OMG! this book was terrible. i loved the ideas that were brought forward but i seemed to me that the "story" of the murder, etc. was simply a vehicle to get some different philosophy about the catholic church into the mainstream. the prose was terrible, the story fairly predicatable and the characters really flat and one dimensional. it's a good fast read if you're looking for something to read on the beach that you don't care about, but other than that, i don't think it merits the hype it's gotten. I think what pisses people off about this book is the fact that he takes a real theory and fictionalizes credible evidence for it. I would say that's the sign of a good writer. I liked the historical refrences in the fictional mystery premise. I thought there were some loopholes, but it was interesting enough to over look them. Sometimes it's hard for us to open our minds and allow new information to permeate us if that new information corrupts the old standards we've been operating under. This book led me on a adventure to find more information supporting his theory... and there is lot's 'Holly Blood, Holly Grail' is amazing and then of course there's 'Blood of the Holly Grail'. The Catholic church has shed so much blood since the dawn of it's existence, and it's nice to see a fictional writer inspire some question asking in such a powerful and intrigue way. I couldn't put this book down and loved every entertaining second of it... and not that it matters but i'm french. Any book that is read by SO many that brings in the idea of feminine devine is more than "ok" with me. It may not be 100% historically accurate, but it has made people that typically don't associate Christianity with anything female at least explore the posibility, or probability, that at one time that WAS how things were. Some readers spurn genre fiction, often due to a misguided belief that mass entertainment is always mindless dribble. For those of you who know better, The Da Vinci Code will make you feel justifiably smug. It's that rare book that manages to both entertain and educate simultaneously. Dan Brown has managed to outdo the best of Robert Ludlum in this byzantine....and engrossing story. There is enough medieval history to please any historian and enough action to satisfy a hardcore thrill-seeker.
