why don't you people try using some of the advice and manifestation techniques first, and then you'll have something to say about it. I have to agree with those who gave this film 1-2 stars such as myself, its opening and subsequent commentary by the speakers reminded me of all those bad Tony Robbins commercials and books in the 80's and 90's. If this stuff motivates you and makes you a better person, who am I to argue? If this is your belief system then by all means I am not one to step on that but must rant a tad here. The beginning where they spoke of technologies and how the secret has been applied to fly us into space, land on the moon etc etc is part of the ploy of Western capitalistic marketing. Is this secret being applied to the Global Warming issues? Are people just becoming entrepreneurs with it and opening businesses? If that is the case and that works for folks fine, but I cannot stand the idea of people applying this "power of positive thinking" and the "law of attraction" to contribute to the grind of the capitalistic machine, all they want are more drones to become distracted by the lure of money and material gain by "The Secret", when they really don't want you to see the real issues at hand, the drain of our natural resources and these false realities that are sold through television, alcohol and other "legal drugs" such as the biggest drug peddlers in the world sell us, the pharmaceutical companies. Without even seeing the vid I have to give it five stars for impact. It obviously elicited some strong emotional reactions, both positive and negative. Makes me wonder what the people that hated it felt so stirring about it, so frightening that they had to so adamantly voice their disapproval. I've never heard so many tantrums on a topic. Folks - I'm not going to pile on with too much ranting about the merits of anyone's personal belief system, but how about some history? The power of positive thought goes back thousands of years (just one example, ever heard of prayer?). If we just focus on the modern era there are stack and stacks of books on the subject. But suddenly someone makes a "documentary", Oprah Winfrey says check it out, and voila something "new" that we all need to pay attention to? For f*ck sakes people, READ once in a while and you'd see that this very thing has actaully been around forever (nearly anyway) and you could read about it at the library, or pick up one of hundreds of volumes on the subject at a used bookstore. One notable example - The Power Of Positive Thinking - came out in 1952 and was on the best seller list for over 180 weeks!!! People have always been desperate for answers, and people have always profitted from providing those answers. Such cynicism, have some faith people... It took, what, 5000 years of civilization for us to arrive at the great secret to happiness, which is (drum roll): Think Good Thoughts. Everything bad that happens to you is because of negative thoughts. Tsunami in Indonesia? Your fault, who told you to be thinking about water? Earthquakes? if you thought less about shaking, maybe you'd be in better shape. War? Those Iraqis should be thinking more about, I don't know, stamp collecting, maybe listen to some Kenny G or something. But it does work, people! Look at the guys who made this movie. I watched the secret recently with a friend. Thank god we didn't actually pay to see it. the whole opening was very sensationalistic and the ideas contained are either rehashed or half-baked. the secret is a crock! a clever marketing ploy to get people to buy it to make the filmmakers rich. it's promotes the inflation of illusion instead the understanding and acceptance of realtiy. don't buy into this delusion. it promotes materialism blatantly, and it is that kind of belief in external fulfillment that is destroying our spirits as well as our ability to live sustainable existences on this earth. - jεnnalεx , posted 03/13/07 |

And again, I'm tired of this pseudoscience crap. I watched the first 20 min of the movie on Youtube to see what all the talk is about, and it is loaded with terms which imply that this "law" is somehow supported by science. Examples include it's a "law of the universe," it's "scientifically proven," and a comparison is made to the law of gravity. The two "quantum physicists" that speak do not say anything which is accepted as fact based (or even as good theory) by modern science and another speaker states that "no one knows what electricity is." Ugh. Please, if you're interested in quantum physics (or electricity) go take some university classes on the subject. I'm not trying to harsh any one's mellow, go ahead and think all the happy thoughts you can stand, but fabricating a scientific basis to legitimize this stuff can have no other purpose than to push book and/or film sales (and it's unethical). - mandy , posted 03/13/07 |
