Theatrical, witty, serious, illustrative of the times.
Mapuin masterfully paints his characters through dialogue. If you like theatre, you'll like the Tales of the City series. The books are set in the late 70s through the early 80s, and are thus a great time capsule of pop culture from those times. Besides the partying and drugs and light-heartedness of the 70s, Maupin also delves into more serious issues of the 80s, writing the first work of fiction to deal with the AIDS epidemic. These books are really addictive, too! I stayed up until the wee hours one morning finishing up the suspenseful third book, which is Maupin's fictional take on the aftermath of the Jonestown Massacre. I highly recommend this entertaining series. - Susan , posted 08/22/05

A must read
One of the best series of books of the community. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to smack Mary Anne as you read the trials and tribulations of the residents of 28 Barbary Lane. - Unsubscribed , posted 08/06/04

A must read!
It's San Francisco! It's gay! It's straight! It's trans! It's the 70s and 80s! It's about life and and love and loss and mystery and humor and the insanity of degrees of separation! And it's all in the "Tales of the City" series of books!

A must read, babycakes! :-) - Unsubscribed , posted 08/06/04
