Do you like weird movies?
Where to begin with this bizarre and compelling story?
It's based on a novel by Ian McEwan, and is about family secrets. This British film tells the complex tale of four children who conspire to hide their dead mother's body to avoid being split apart and sent to an orphanage by children's services.
Somehow they avoid being caught, at least for a while, as they maintain a somewhat efficient family unit.
Then mistrust and a deeply disturbing relationship between the older siblings rife with sexual overtones changes everything.
The older sister has an admirer who has a hint of what might be going on, and this threatens to destroy their facade.
This offbeat film is disturbing but a riveting find for anyone interested in deviations from the world of international film.
The older sister is portrayed by Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. Her performance is honest, and her quiet intensity definitely adds to the film's tension.
Do not see this if themes of incest disturb you in the least. Small warning.
