Director Hou Hsaio-hsien (Café Lumiere, Millennium Mambo) has consistently turned out beautiful films at a level only a few select directors (Kim Ki-Duk, Wong Kar Wei) can hope to approach. His new film is an omnibus- three different love stories, each from a different era (1911, 1966, and present-day), each one starring the ravishing Shu Qi and Chang Chen. Each story explores themes and eras Hou has previously addressed, but adds a phenomenal willingness to experiment with different techniques and aesthetics. It adds up to a film that is consistently heartbreaking, and always gorgeous, but never dull, not even for a moment. - iaTV , posted 05/17/06
