Great Effects
The story was strong and credible, the mask a bit over the top but if you know anything about the gunpowder plot, pretty good, i think this was based on a comic book. The story was full of energy and the actors convincing - a weakish ending that left you open for a sequel.

Worth watching - Clinton , posted 06/07/07

Orwellian classic that is action packed and leaves you with something to think about regarding fascist terror-mongering in the post-9/11 era - Adam , posted 09/26/06

Good, not great.
One of the problems that I had with this movie is that I went into the theater with high expectations. It's really tough for action movies to live up to their hype these days, when stunning effects are the norm.

In my school of thought, there are two ways to make a killer action movie: if the director has a great script, then they must never sacrifice it to deliver on the action. If the director doesn't have a great script, then they should go all-out to give the viewer non-stop action. This movie had a mediocre script and wasn't paced very well, so it didn't deliver on either of those two formulas. As with many comic-book (graphic novel) adaptations, the original material didn't translate easily into a screenplay. The end result was that the time between action sequences left much to be desired, which produced many awkward lulls. If the script had been a little tighter, no problem.

In V, the directors took too much time away from the action to bash the viewer over the head with the underlying message of the film. That message is: nations who surrender the freedom to dissent are but a few steps away from totalitarianism. Nice message, but give us a little credit. We can catch on to the similarities between the directors' dystopia and the current state of things without all the patronizing news montages thrown in to make sure we get it.

That said, I didn't leave the movie frustrated that I had just wasted $9, which is how I feel many times after watching big-budget action films. This movie was a great way to spend a Friday night, but it's not a film that will linger in my memory years from now as a great flick. - Capitol P , posted 04/16/06

I for one, loved this movie and see it in IMAX tres coolio
Perhaps I am a bit of a radical and perhaps I have read too much consipiracy theory but I was happy to see such a film and such ideas on the Hollywood screen for mass consuption. It was a well crafted film in it's own right and the story made it that much richer. The art direction alone is worth the price of admission, it's a beautiful spectacle to watch. But the story was the best part of all. Of course, it could of gone further, and perhaps some of the ideas that seem blatant to the likes of me might be lost on the crowd it seems to attempt to reach, but all in all impressive, wonderful film. I hope it makes someone think and connect the dots betwixt fantasy and reality - Mary , posted 04/10/06

Gripping, fun, poignant movie.
I haven't had a chance to read the graphic novel yet, but I certainly will after watching this! This movie is set in a time, not unlike our own, where government lies, censorship, and fear rule. It had great action, a gripping story, and definitely worth seeing in the theater! - Jenni , posted 03/28/06

Its about time...
I did go and see V for Vendetta this past weekend and on IMAX to top it all off. I have to say, it was a phenomenal experience.

I was amazed and speechless after watching this film. I have to admit it has been months maybe a year or so where I was awestruck and just consumed by a film. It very rarely happens, but when it does, its great.

After reading everyone's posts and reviews, I agree with all of you. The film did hit on current events of the American government and you would have to be stupid not to pick up on that. I do agree, we do have had a lot of films out that do not give us the answers or just raise questions to the problem in the world today. Very rarely do they give us a straight forward answer on how and what to solve our problems.
I look at it this way, this film is a piece of art, art reflects society. Art reflects the current events, it is not suppose to give us answers. Society needs to step up instead of looking for film for answers and dig deep inside ourselves to figure out how we can get ourselves out of messes like the one we are in right now. The film is a catylyst to get human thought and emotion into action, it is meant to stir up feelings and make us find answers and act on them.

I know how frustrating things can be and we all want the easy answers whether it be from film, art, theatre, books, etc. All of these things are made to make us think...the answers are up to you and to me. - Courtney , posted 03/21/06

yet another savior complex propogator
Indeed, I loved the movie. It did everything that I wanted it to do for me - made extremely blatant metaphors to the present day, presented the argument for the terrorist mindset, and, yes, natalie.

However, leaving the film, I couldn't help but be stuck with that sickly feeling of "wow.... so what do we do now?" Yet another film along the same lines as F9/11, Loose Change, and Why We Fight, that present compelling wrongs but offer no pragmatic solution to these wrongs (well, this one offers terrorism... pragmatic? eh.).

Moreso, this is yet another story in which the huddled masses are saved by an individual. Granted, it leads for good storytelling, but the savior complex has plagued our society for quite some time now. By the time it takes a savior idealogy to actually become pragmatic the situation has been pushed to an extreme, as presented in this movie, The Matrix, and, well, every other savior complex movie.

So what does this teach us? Don't worry about shit until shit really hits the fan, and then wait around in the shit and hope that some wingnut psychojob will step forward and dedicate his life to rectifying the shit problem? (Star Wars, Matrix, Vendetta, Jesus, LOTR, etc)

So yes a good film. Definately see it. It'll get your head churning a bit. - Martilias , posted 03/21/06

excellente!
Might Vendetta be a prophet like Jesus? I need to read the book~

I couldn't help but laugh out loud when the avaricious ranting man in the shower slipped and fell on his rump. I think i was the only one who laughed- but it just kinda burst out.

The domino sceen at first made me think that the fall of the parliament was Vendetta's self fullfilled profecy since there was one domino left standing- however Vendetta knew the truth behind the facist government and was merely trying to reveal the governments true spirit and intentions. There is no doubt that Vendetta loves the community. The fact that he sacrificed himself in the end was classic.
I really liked how all those civilians put on his outfit in the end and walked through the police - who thought they were going to be violent - when all they did was peacefully watch the plan of the universe unfold unto itself.
I also really liked that you never got to see Vendetta's face because he proclaimed that no matter what he looks like on the outside the idea of him and his spirit will continue to BEE.
AND the part about the talk show were the president pointed his finger at the "terrorist" and pulled off his mask and it was as though he was looking in the mirror. what a grand paradox! Bravo!
Did anyone notice that the girl that got shot was "alive" in the end~ perhaps her spirit is alive. Did jesus say- "let the children lead the way"? maybe i need to read the bible too. - Unsubscribed , posted 03/20/06

WOW
Even days after watching this masterpiece, I can only sum up the experience properly in one word: WOW. I did not have the pleasure of reading the Graphic Novel first, perhaps that's why I can give it 5 stars since I was not dissapointed by the departures from the original story. I highly suggest that you should see this film. At the very least, you will be treated to over 2 hours of stunning eye candy. At best, you will experience a story that could begin a dialogue with yourself and others that could very well bring about the very revolution that is at the heart of this film's message.

Update ------

I just saw it for a second time, something I rarely do. I enjoyed it just as much. - Psychotty , posted 03/20/06

Read the Novel
It earns the 4th star from me because I got to gaze upon lovely V for so long, and because he killed some people nicely. It gets 3 right away for having preserved certain moments - the brief glimpse of his emergence from the flame, the death of Delia, and the education of Evey, most notably. I would strike the 4th star if I could because I was really hoping to see ... the real thing. It wasn't that; it was a very different story. I could go on forever about why it's nobler for V to have Finch kill him, the missing sex-behind-the-scenes (I mean the computer! not the 'desperate wives'..! the computer! the perverted part!); what really disappointed me (other than the hokum of the ending and the non-event of Evey *not* taking up the mantle in her own non-killing way) - V declares a romantic kind of love for Evey which *DESTROYED* the deep significance of their relationship, in my opinion.

I wanted to be able to give this fucker 5 stars, but no go.

I missed the infallible V - the calm V who knows exactly what he is and never falters, never fails. I missed his poetry, his unswerving understanding of the consequence of his choices and acts. I missed the V of inhuman coldness - killing a man with nothing but his finger, just because said man was between him and his target. I missed the meticulous V who had the whole thing planned out years before the story begins - it diluted the significance of the dominoes for him not to have had all the elements in place and dancing to his tune.

I MISSED THE ACID. I missed Finch going insane deliberately to be able to catch V finally. I missed the COP ON DRUGS in a big way. Shame, Wachbrothers! And HEY: WHAT ABOUT" ANARCHY"?!?!?!?! THE WORD DID NOT APPEAR.

But. There were many things they added or changed that I liked. So I begrudgingly parcel out the fourth star with an enjoinder:

the last inch
The graphic novel where this movie takes it's narrative was and is one of the stories I keep by my bed at night to read to remind me of the frailness and the immensity of the human soul.
Three of the speeches that V gives in the Comic book were strangely edited and missing, but all in all it really did right by the material. A great movie in it's own right and I hope it also inspires people to check the origional which is a grand peice of literature...
Well cast and very powerfully acted, I am in full support of this vision and I pray you see it and it helps you to wake from whatever aspect of your life you are sleeping in...

Time to piss some of you off- (and rightfully so)
Yes it's the Wachowski's, yes WARNER BROS is relesseing it, and yes DC Comics who gave us Batman and Robin, Steel, Superman IV the Quest of Peace, and CATWOMAN(!) is publishing it. Despite all of this, and a running time of almost 2 1/2 hours, it was one of the most enveloping film expriences I've had in a very long time. Originally set to open somewhat earlier (from what I understand) it was pushed back and re-edited due to the London bombings on 07/07/05/AD. For that reason, and the one of the leads being considered a terrorist, this film will most likely get some debate gong as to the curent world goverment(s) and the people they supposedly serve. It touches on the right (and will) to live freely and without fear with such side story lines as same sex couples, authority figures doubting there roll in the system, and confronting of the horrors in your past. I just hope American audiences can get pased the FX's and the fact that it's based in London and see the idea of it applied to themselves in the hear and now.
(Steps on soapbox)
BTW- Nataile Portman CAN act. Just because she was in the shity Star Wars prequels, (god I'm really fucking hateing that word now) doesn't mean she is branded forever. This film proves it IMHO; besides- it is a documented FACT that Lucas CAN NOT direct actors. He is a tech director. He can make the screen look pretty (mostly) but woe to the poor actors who have him behind the camera.
