Verizon
I've been using them for years and while their rates and packages are at least competitive, its the service and coverage that sold me on them. Also, check out CNet.com (click on Cell phones and Service) for objective reveiws. I rely heavily on this site for everything electronic/techno. Good luck!

Meh
Their coverage was good, but I'm almost never in an area where my Verizion company phone gets reception and my Cingular personal phone doesn't.
The company itself just makes me angry. A couple times I found myself signed up (and paying) for services I had not requested, and I could not pay my bill over the phone because their system didn't like the fact that my bank and I reside in different ZIP codes.
The nail in the coffin for my relationship with them was when I moved. Due to some deal with them not being able to transfer accounts' locations between certain regions, they closed my old account and opened a new one, and switched my web account over to the new one. Combine that with paperless billing, and I ended up in collection because all my bills were saying I was all paid up even though my old account still had some money on it and they never sent me any correspondence about it (paperless billing!). And the customer service reps were complete jerks about the deal from square one when I discovered this fact and called them about it.

No thanks. I'll take my business to a company that doesn't take my money without asking. - Sean , posted 06/22/05
Verizon has best coverage but expensive
Verizon is definitley the best coverage hands down. Though with the new Cingular/AT&T network we might have a very close second.

Two drawbacks with Verizon: 1. Expensive, 2. Newest phones not always available. - Thomas , posted 02/25/05

Expensive, but worth it.
Charging for text messaging is a pain, but their coverage is unbeatable. They are getting better re: pricing; I have 1000 minutes on 2 phones for $69.99, which is what AT&T charged for 400 minutes on their old TDMA plan. - Unsubscribed , posted 02/25/05

Best Data Service, Best Coverage Out In The Sticks
Verizon has not abandoned their 800mhz network, so they have
better coverage in outlying areas than the other carriers that are using 1.9ghz only.
1.9ghz has shorter range, which is good for filling in additional
coverage in high-demand areas but not so good further out.
Verizon uses both the low and high band.

Verizon also has higher data speeds than the GSM-based carriers (50-100kbps instead of 20-40), and data is included
in free nights and weekends.

Verizon Wireless is the only way to go!
If coverage is of any emportance to you, Verizon is the ONLY way to go. I travel into the Santa Cruz mountains on regular basis, as well as the beach along Hwy 1. Verizon is the ONLY carrier that works in most places. Even at my San Jose home, I've had other carrier users unable to make calls. All this is said with MANY years of experience.
