This is a story about a young man named Gilbert Grape(Johnny Depp). He lives in a house in a small town with his dysfunctional familly which is the laughing stock of the town. His mother, is clinically obese and hasn't left their home for 7 years since her husband disappeared. Gilbert's teenage brother Arnie(Leonardo Di Caprio) is mentally challenged and causes havoc for the rest of the familly. Gilbert is torn by the love and shame he has for his familly. He desperately wants to leave but feels the weight of responsibility to remain at home and be there for his loved ones. He is resigned to his fate until one day a strange girl(Julliette Lewis) enters the town in a traveling camper carravan. This is an Excellent move. The acting is first rate. Depp gives an awesome, subtle, and sensitive performance. Di Caprio gives a performance just as amazing. It is even more impressive considering how young he is in this film.
