Blast from the Past movie about Pimp-dom (1974)
Back in the days when "pimp" was a shady ocupation rather than something to aspire to, along came "The Mack" and "Willie Dynamite." Those two movies, along with the Iceberg Slim and Donald Goines books, paved the way for P-I-M-P to go mainstream. ...
Willie Dynamite (1972) is the story of a pimp who is on top of the world - he has the biggest stable, the most corners, the finest hos, the finest vines, etc etc. Then it all comes crashing down. As a super-capitalist, he refuses to join the City Pimp's Collective - and the rival pimps now want revenge.
I have shown this movie to several people, and few people knew what they were getting themselves into. Some people couldn't sit through the entire movie - others stole my copy they enjoyed it so much. "Willie Dynamite" is a classic "blaxploitation" movie from the 1970s - the clothes are unbelievable, giving us a glimpse of what we are missing today; the people were socially and politically conscious, rather than "politically correct;" and the cars and language were probably shocking in the 1970s but commonplace today.
I wouldn't recommend watching this movie in isolation - check out other classics from the times such as Dolemite, Black Belt Jones and The Mack. There are several books and a new documentary about 1970s Black Cinema that will allow you to situate the movie historically.
Check it out - you might become a raving fan.
