Xasthur...excellence in extreme music...
Xasthur are one of the few bands in black metal that still seem to actually be in the pursuit of darkness. "Nocturnal Poisoning" is a record that reflects a wonderfully hideous tonality that I wish was made more often in a scene dominated by bedroom black metal that lacks neither orginality and atmosphere. Xasthur of course, have these things in spades. The production on this record is hazy and "cold" in a truly ancient manner that reflects all the instruments, but doesn't fall into the "rock and roll" production trap. The performances are just maniacal with the shifting beats, swirling guitars and suffering vocals leading you through catacombs of black thought. Needless to say, I am impressed by the violent surge on this record.

While no one track is bad on this record my favorites to list include "Soul Abduction Ceremony", "Nocturnal Poisoning" and "A Walk Beyond Utter Blackness". Malefic conjures up many strange atmospheres on this record, and while some may appeal to you more than others - none of them are poorly created. This man deserves a medal for this compositional oddity. It's not entirely devoid of music, but it's also able to lull you into a strange trance that both kicks and confounds the hell out of you.

Xathur may be the best one man band working in the black metal area that leans more towards ambient/atmospheric black metal. Few bands have dared to reach out so far, yet capture a strong sense of composition in quite some time. If you like any form of black metal, ambient music or extreme sounds of any kind...this is a must own.
