James Kalm Saves You a Trip!
Of course, there’s nothing like seeing art in person. I remember my days in art history classes gazing through a dark room at enormous illuminated works of art, never quite grasping how distorted the scale was from piece to piece. And living in New York City, with more galleries and museums at my fingertips than I knew what to do with, I would wander into exhibition spaces amazed at how much better the colors were, how much more interesting the textures were, and how wrong I had been about the size of some of my favorite paintings. However, now that I don’t live that close to my favorite galleries in NYC, I have to make calculated weekend trips to cram in as much art as my eyeballs can handle, and even then, it’s impossible to do this on a monthly basis.

Enter James Kalm; half-assed art reporter who shows up on the scene with his trusty steed, the crappy bicycle he uses as transportation through every season. James not only visits all of the gallery shows you might otherwise miss, but he engages artists and audience alike into spontaneous interviews at openings and other gallery hours. He also has several videos of studio visits and conversations with artists who are at home, in their element, or working in mid-phase on new pieces of art. It’s an amazing glimpse into the lives and work of today’s most active artists.

One of the things I like best about the James Kalm Channel is his unflinching, and unabashed approach to getting what he wants. He’ll sneak his camera into events that he would otherwise be kicked out of, interrupt people in mid-conversation, and even call people out on bullshit if they take him for a schmuck. But he’s not aggressive or annoying, he’s keeping it real. And he’s always pleasant and positive. He is a man who truly loves art and the art scene in NYC.

For me, it keeps me informed of what’s going on. His undiscerning coverage of mega-rock star events at the Guggenheim along side his visits to the smallest most remote gallery in Williamsburg make his videos an education in and of themselves. I encourage anyone who’s interested in art, especially the scene in NYC, to check out his channel.
