if you want something very nice and with great support then try alienware
zari-
sounds like fun.
if this is a one time project, go with any machine that is faster then what you have now.
if this is something you want to do on a regular basis then i'd take your money and find a good local shop to build one for you. this will save you some money and let you get exactly what you want.
if you want something very nice and with great support then try alienware. below is a link to the best custom systems within your budget. the support they offer is awesome!

as a general rule, many of the same features of a good gaming machine will be things to look for in your editing box. some of the things i'd look for:
Memory:
1 GB of RAM. (don't go with less and faster is betterthen slower what you need here)
Processor:
Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading(acts like two processors)
or
a AMD athalon 64. (see 2nd link above) <--VERY fast)
Video:
no reason to go with less then 64MB of memory here. 128 is the sweet spot and you want either an nVidia or ATI chip. remember that this card is only going to render the display of your work. (the CPU/memory/harddrives will do the real work) also, look for S-Video out.
HardDriveS:(this is where most people screw up a good editing machine or make it less then it could/should be.)
i'd put two fast(7200rpm or better) SATA hard drives in a RAID0 stripe. try to get ones with 8MB of cache on each drive. the size is upto you but i'd go no smaller then 80GB each for your project.

let me know if you have any questions on the above. it should be enogh to get you started shopping.
good luck,
