Free-association tribe
I found an abondoned free-association tribe and became moderator.
Use it if you like: tribes.tribe.net/8a319e7e-...f1cbc96673 - Swarm , posted 03/28/06

No, it's not full featured or beautiful yet, but
when you're being developed by a few folks on their off time from work and taking time away from other recreational activities and families, it's gonna take a bit of time.

The volunteer staff is not big, either.

And I seriously doubt it's going to ever be bought out. That's part of the point of the whole thing!

Oh, and I'm not a full-fledged hippie, but I certainly have a lot of hippie leanings, and I'm quite comfortable there. - spank_me_plz , posted 02/09/06

We're not for sale and we like hippies!
F-A was originally my idea and I went to UC Santa Cruz fer cryin' out loud. No place to go for the hippie-averse, I assure you.

I know *I* just don't like the creepy, culty est-meets-scientology-sounding stuff with a patina of "flower-power" thrown on that a certain other site is shoveling on like the grade-b, nutrient-poor manure it is. Dunno where this notion of "free-association doesn't like hippies" got started... - Sonya , posted 02/09/06

Too much time in front of a computer
Who the hell has the time to sit in front of a computer and test out all these betas? Let alone develop a profile and a list of friends on each of them?

Whoever it is... i think I'll let them do the work for me. Let me know when it is PERFECT guys. So then I can make the once and final switch-over.

My prediction: zaadz, Free-Asso..... all of them will be bought out by Walmart as soon as they get as perfect as Tribe did.

damn hippies
Uh, news flash: no one cares if you're a hippy. Zaadz is new-agey and hippy-centric, there's no denying that. But if you can't read that statement as it as intended, well, who cares? Let me piss you off further, then:

Futurama: The Problem With Popplers.

Farnsworth: "Hey! Unless this is a nude love-in... get the hell off my property!"
Free Waterfall Junior: "You can't own property, man."
Farnsworth: "I can. But that's because I'm not a penniless hippie."
Leela: "What do you people want?"
Free Waterfall Junior: "We're with mankind for ethical animal treatment. Popplers are little creatures. You got to stop harvesting them for food."
Bender: "Or what?"
Free Waterfall Junior: "Or we'll boycott Fishy Joe's."
Leela: "You're vegetarians. Who cares what you do?"
Free Waterfall Junior: "Shut up!"
Leela: "Animals eat other animals. It's nature."
Free Waterfall Junior: "No it isn't. We taught a lion to eat tofu."
Lion: *cough* *pause* *cough*

If you don't find that funny, well... fuck you, you damn hippy. :)

FA is about censorship, period. It's not like it was planned in the first place, the people who are doing this were tribe fans, tribe lovers. They are doing this as a reaction to the state of things; tribe censorship, corporate ownership, American pornography laws. Do you have the slightest clue how much effort this takes? It's not like you just extract an archive and fire up the web server. This is actual work.

Sure, a lot of those involved wanted a challenge and are 176.31% more motivated now that they're forced to do it, but it still wasn't something designed to make money or anything. As a hippy, you should really understand the motivation behind FA. Get on board! All hippies welcome! - Frayed , posted 02/05/06

not anti-anything
If you pay attention you'll notice it's NOT the Free-Association.net people making the anti-hippie remarks. That has come from the outside reviews who don't much like Zaadz.

angry hippies wanting their label?
I think the hippy comment was about Zaadz - and yes, it's pretty damn flaky. I'm no slouch when it comes to world religions and spiritual practices, but that place makes me want to gag.

At any rate, both FA and Zaadz are both just getting started, and while I'm less than excited by them we'll just have to see what happens. - Unsubscribed , posted 02/05/06

F-A.net: for hippies AND non-hippies
It definitely needs some work, like anything still in beta, but it has great potential. I'll push for better user interface and functionality, but I'm very happy to see a service where I can safely talk about my interests without the administrators freaking out.

I like hippies. I live with a bunch of them. We recycle and compost and talk about our feelings a lot. But I have no problem with F-A.net... I can only assume the original reviewer intended to differentiate between F-A.net and Zaadz, which seems to be only for hippies. (I was told more or less that my interests weren't positive and spiritual enough for Zaadz, so all the shiny user interface in the world won't get me to set foot there.) - Kerrick , posted 02/05/06

discrimination against hippies is definitely a turn-off...
Yeah, what's your trip with the "no hippies" description? Not everyone has big, fat, negative connotations with the word "hippie". The hippies that I know, most of whom don't actually fit into any one, specific category, could not be considered in a negative light. There is definitely the genus of "drain-bo" that I strive to avoid, but most of them don't even have it together enough to have a profile on here (let alone your hippie-free site. "without the hippies" is a lot more alienating a tag-line than an enticing one. Who wants to hang with a group who's specifically anti whatever? ugh. - , posted 02/05/06

Another Alternative to Tribe without the CENSORSHIP!!--Still in Beta...
Their servers are actually housed outside of the U.S. so they're not subjected to 2257 laws/regulations (they do have a terms of use--but it pertains to spam, stalking & kiddie porn). The user interface is different from tribe, it's fairly easy to navigate. However it's still in beta...bugs need to be worked out.
