Idan Raichel Project - Touching & Mind blowing
If you love fusion music, this is a must listen. I finally discovered the "Idan Raichel Project". A brainchild of Idan Raichel to fuse music from within Israel's diverse jewish community, which mainly includes ethiopian and middle eastern styles. The links above take you to his website and also to a site to buy or listen to music samples.

Also check out youtube.com for some of his music videos. The music from this project has depth and sensitivity that touches your soul. I'm totally smitten. - mitesh , posted 02/12/07

9/8 music: response
My favorite 9/8 tunes are on the CD "Music from the Crossroads of Time" by Byzantium. Traditional Turkish instrumentation, mostly saz (no modern instruments). There are 3 on there, each a different tempo. However, this CD is hard to find (or at least has been. I haven't looked for it lately!)
Another good one is Roman Oyon Havalari Vols. 1 & 2. Rom style 9/8 of various tempos, plus some 4/4 tunes.
I also like the Tamzara on Mirage's "Yarus" CD, and "Armut Agaci" on the first Harem CD.
There's a good "Rompi Rompi" on the Gypsy Fire CD, sung by Richard Hagopian.
Hmmm, can't think of any others at the moment.
If I think of more I'll post again...

Stellamara and Jack or Jive
The singer of the world music band Stellamara has an
amazing, sensual voice, full of glottal stops and
soaring sighs. She's backed by some virtouso oud and
violin playing, and thunderous percussion. Medieval,
modern, and magical--for lover of Dead Can Dance and
Vas. (She's also gorgeous).

Chako of the Japanese band Jack or Jive sometimes
sounds a little offkey (which adds makes for some
disturbing, off kilter moments), but at her best, she
can sound like an Asian Liz Fraser. Her songs are in
her private language, and her compositions vacilate
between melancholic piano pieces and
electro-tribal-ambient pieces. The piano pieces are
what I'd imagine Liz would sound like in such a
musical setting.
