Hong Kong v Shanghai
well, i'm back from my 5 day trip to Hangzhou Suzhou and Shanghai, and i gotta say...china has not impressed me at the least.

reason this review is HK v Shanghai, is because the shanghaines want to 'surpass' HK in every single way possible, and since i've been in both cities it only makes sense to shed some light on them.

first, china...omfg its a shithole. you gotta constantly make sure your not pickpocketed, run over or stabbed. i got pickpocketed twice, lucky i had my wallet tied to me...first time, i managed to grab the guy, and our tourguide said i could punch him :S so yeh..i did.

out of the 3 cities i've visited so far Hangzhou was the prettiest, and safest outta the 3. the style of cooking is quite interesting and good, and the history, if your into that kinda thing, is really interesting.
but that hardly compensates for the fact that NO ONE follows the road rules...first time i crossed the road. i get hit by some idiot in his merc at roughly 5km/h. They don't stop for you, even though you are in the middle of the road.

Suzhou was very similar, the style of cooking was really wierd tasting, and the massage palour was really good. but again the traffic is extremely dangerous and i got pick pocketed, where i punched the guy in the throat.

Shanghai. Shopping central? Beautiful city? I think not. Sure, its got really creative skyscrapers, heaps of shopping centres, and seemingly good public transport, but its all superficial. the people are arrogant, mean, unhelpful where-ever you go. the shopping is far from excellent. either you go for the fake goods, and they might fall apart, or the quality of the goods are just shit for the price you pay. If you go for original, you get chopped with the sales tax, a lot of goods in shanghai are more expensive than in sydney.

so all i can say is, unless you enjoy history, and maybe just wanna go to for the expierience, stay away from shanghai.

Hong Kong. This may seem a bit biased, mainly cause i feel like a local here, but everything is amazing here. the shopping is excellent, cheap, heaps of variety. E.g. a giordano polo (for rami) will set you back 9 AUD. Yes 9 dollars. The food here is so damn cheap. 50AUD for a buffet in the marriot hotel, and i can't begin to describe the kinda food they offer. Since i got here i've put on 5 Kg because i can eat 3 times the amount of food for the same amout of money i spend in OZ.

The public transport is pretty much a door to door service, but then again its a small city. road rules are followed, and people are generally nice and helpful. i have not once been warned about pickpockets, or muggers, even in the most shabby looking places.

well i gtg get drunk with my cousins again, so i'll end it here.

i'd rate hong kong 8.5/10 only cause summers are extremely humid

and shanghai 4.5/10

i have yet to go to beijing, and i here its a bit better than shanghai - xander , posted 07/09/06
