When I was a kid, I became fascinated with tortoises. Specifically, I had a box turtle. What's interesting about a box turtle is that it actually has the ability to close its shell completely and basically act like a rock. Her life was about eating vegetables, burying herself in the dirt, and avoiding trouble. I also had a dog and cat, and generally when you let these animals outside, their first reaction is to bolt to the first interesting thing. The turtle's first reaction was to stick its head high as it could and smell the breezes. And when another animal tried to get at it, the turtle's instinct was to hide in its shell and wait for the animal to move on. I used to wonder just what a box turtle thought about the world. What did it think about all the busy-bodies scurrying their ways through life while it was sniffing the air and feeling the wind on its face?
