i am feeling more desperate than ever in my attempts to spread the word about the war against youth occuring on a daily basis in our lovely public school system (especially youth of color, from low income backgrounds, who do not speak english as a first language).we have the ongoing challenges of fighting a system in which schools where rich kids in rich neighborhoods who have families that pay for them to get tutored to do well on the bullshit standarized biased test they take get rewarded, while schools with limited resources and populations of recent immigrants living in poverty get taken over by the state and inundated with textbook teaching and learning...
we also have schwarzie calling for a wasteful special election that does nothing to address the problems of fewer resources, larger classes, and more pressure from an out of control accountability system, but rather amounts to a war against teachers and public education.
teachers and unions and activists deperately call on all of you to get out and vote and keep access to a creative and dynamic public education a right, not a privilege.stop kids from coming to school with a price tag and name brand on their forehead, depending on which neighborhood they get to be a part of.
i had to show my students where all of their textbooks (mostly in english, even though I teach a bilingual spanish class) were today so when the old white men from the Williams lawsuit came in to make sure that every student had a textbook for each subject area, we would not get shut down for being out of compliance with state mandates.soon, i will have people coming to my room to make sure that i am on page 205 of our adopted, invasive language arts curriculum at 10:05 on thursday.this is not the way kids learn and we need your help to stop schools from becoming jails that set up kids of color for failure in the world and feed them into the prisons that are being made with all the money taken from education.
save our schools, join a phone back, educate others about
the propositions, hug a teacher.
